How to Prep for Your Next Family Portrait Session (Without the Stress) 📸👨👩👧👦
Jun 22, 2025 | By: Inspire Me Photography, LLC
Let’s be real—getting the whole family ready for photos can feel like a lot. Outfits, moods, nap times, snack breaks, and trying to get everyone to smile at the same time? It’s enough to make anyone feel overwhelmed.
But here's the good news: it doesn't have to be stressful. With a little prep and the right mindset, your family portrait session can be fun, meaningful, and even (gasp!) enjoyable.
Here’s everything you need to know to feel fully prepared and excited for your next session:
👗 1. Start with Outfits—but Don’t Overthink It
Coordinating outfits can be the biggest source of stress, so here are a few tips to make it easier:
- Start with one outfit you love (usually mom’s!) and build around it.
- Stick to a color palette, not matching clothes. Think earthy tones, soft neutrals, or warm colors that complement each other.
- Avoid logos, graphics, and neon colors—they can distract from the connection.
- Keep it comfortable—kids move better when they’re not pulling at collars or scratchy seams!
Bonus: Lay out everyone’s outfits ahead of time and do a quick try-on session a few days before to avoid last-minute surprises. Even better, send a quick phone pic to me for input and/or take aways.
⏰ 2. Choose the Right Time for Your Family
I’ll help you choose the best light (like golden hour!), but you know your family’s rhythms best. If your toddler melts down by 6 p.m., consider an earlier time or morning session.
A well-timed session = happy kids = beautiful photos.
And yes, bribery (I mean incentives) can work wonders. Bring a little treat or reward for after the session—think small toys, fruit snacks, or a promised trip to the park.
🧺 3. Pack a Small “Photo Day Kit”
A few small things can make your session go smoothly:
- Wipes or tissues (for last-minute cleanups)
- Hairbrush or comb
- Snacks + water
- Backup outfits for little ones (just in case)
- Favorite toy or comfort item (even if it stays just off-camera)
💆♀️ 4. Let Go of Perfection—and Embrace Connection
Real smiles. Real cuddles. Real giggles. That’s what makes your session beautiful.
If your kids are wiggly, silly, or totally unpredictable? That’s okay! I’ll capture the magic in the moments between—the way your child reaches for your hand, the joy on their face when you tickle them, the way your family fits together just as you are.
Let go of the pressure to be perfect—and let yourselves just be.
📸 5. Trust the Process (and Your Photographer 😉)
I’ll guide you through it all—poses, prompts, candid moments, and everything in between. You don’t need to know what to do or how to stand. Just show up with your people and be ready to love on them.
We’ll create something beautiful together, chaos and all.
💛 Final Thoughts
Family photos are about more than just updating the wall gallery—they’re about freezing a moment in time. Whether your kids are tiny or nearly grown, this season is worth remembering.
So, take the deep breath. Prep a little. Trust a lot. And let’s make some magic.
📅 Ready to book your next session? I’d love to help you create lasting memories—messy hair, wild giggles, and all.
